A dark cloud has been hanging over Thursday Game Night these past few weeks. Players have been quietly lining up on different sides of a growing chasm between those that prefer the classic gameplay of “Halo 3” and those that prefer the more frenetic action of “Call of Duty 4.” In the interest of preventing a schism (like those seen in small-town Baptist churches) I will shoulder the burden of scientifically deriving which of the two games is in fact superior.
Projectile Weapons: “Halo 3″ has cool futuristic guns, true (needler FTW!) But “CoD4″ has 21 real-life assault rifles, sub-machine guns, light machine guns, etc – each with perfect sound effects and unique characteristics.
Melee Weapons: No contest here. The “CoD4″ knife may be magical, but “Halo 3″ has the energy sword, the gravity hammer and you can smack people with your guns.
Explosives: Not an easy pick here. “CoD4″ basic frag grenade is a lot more effective than the frags in “Halo 3″, but “Halo 3″ has stickies and spikies that are a remarkably humiliating way to kill someone. On the other hand, “CoD4″ has weapon-mounted grenade launchers which are pretty nifty. In the end, though, the Halo rocket launcher is a lot better than the RPGs in CoD4.
Gadgets: “CoD4″ lets you bring claymores, night-vision, and smoke/stun/flash grenades. “Halo 3″ gives you bubble shields, power drains, and grav lifts. Tie.
Vehicles: Almost unfair to include this; “Halo 3″ has several cool vehicles including aircraft, tanks, and ATVs. “CoD4″ has none.
Matchmaking: “Halo 3″ (in ranked mode) has a very nice ‘skill matching’ feature and a better party system. “CoD4″ matchmaking is usually faster and you have the option of continuing to play with the same group of people for multiple games without ‘partying up.’ Tie.
Gameplay Modes: This is a contentious category since it’s more ‘opinion based.’ Generally, I prefer the objective modes (domination, sabotage, headquarters) in “CoD4″ to “Halo 3″, but its basic slayer mode and silly Oddball and Crazy King modes are a ton of fun as well. In the interest of avoiding taint, I will make this category a tie.
Maps: At first I thought all the “CoD4″ maps looked the same. Now, though, I find that I prefer the more subtle differences in “CoD4″ maps to the more obvious, but less relevant differences in “Halo 3″ maps. I do wish that “CoD4″ had a couple of ‘bigger’ maps like Valhalla/Sandtrap.
Experience System: “CoD4″ is just better. Experience points are awarded for each kill, each completed objective, each game (win or lose!) and completing any of the hundreds of challenges in game. “Halo 3″ gives you 1 point for a win in Social or Ranked play.
Customization/Personalization: “Halo 3″ lets you change your armor and color thereof (which then gets overridden in team-based games.) “CoD4″ lets you create multiple classes with different weapons, weapon accessories, and ‘Perks’ that allow you to run faster/shoot better/etc.
In-Game Rewards: The medal system in “Halo 3″ is pretty neat – I like having a record of all the cool things a player accomplished in a round. But “CoD4″ rewards your skill with real benefits (radar, airstrikes and helicopters!!!) in addition to unlocking extra perks and weaponry.
Metrics Tracking: This one doesn’t bear discussing. “Halo 3″ lets you review every game you’ve ever played via Bungie.net. “CoD4″ has no equivalent system.
It’s the Little Things: “CoD4″ just has a lot of little touches that I appreciate. The ability to go prone, sprint, the awesomeness of the ‘Martyrdom’ perk. Not having to push-to-talk when you have more than four people on your team is a good thing.
Final Tally
“Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” firmly trounces “Halo3: Post-Modern Warfare” 6W - 4L -3T. I’ll ignore the fact that Master Chef would singlehandedly defeat the entire U.S. Marine Force Recon in a fair fight.
Edit: The debate is officially over. “Halo 3″ has signed an armistice agreement. As Bungie’s Lead AI Programmer Damian Isla points out:
“We have a lot to learn from their success too, they did some very innovative things to keep people going and their experience-rewards system was something that we paid a lot of attention to… I think it’s a great game and single player obviously is fantastic… They did a hell of a job with their set pieces, of scripting certain moments that they were really sure the player was going to actually see and experience first hand. The way that they use those moments to craft the player experience… Halo has a lot to learn from.”

Halo 3 and CoD 4 both are a great FPS games. They’re both kicked ass. So, if someone says “CoD is the best” or “Halo 3 is awesome”, it’s up to their lack of choice. Wanna wreak havoc in a map? Play Halo. Wanting a great frontal & more realistic battle? Play CoD. So, it’s a “win-win” solution.
Sorry, bad grammar…

Im glad to see that more people agree that both games are phenomenal and push the boundaries of FPS game play as we know it. I love Halo so much, it is one of my favorite games of all time , it’s the reason I bought the original Xbox. To me Halo has the perfect pacing in a shooter, its not to fast, the weapons are fun the vehicles are fun the equipment is fun I just love everything about the game. Halo will forever hold a special place in my roster of favorite games. Now on too CoD4, to be quite honest I never played any of the previous CoD games all the way thru (I am sick and tired of WWII games -_-!) but CoD4 is an awesome game, from the first level I was blown away at the attention to detail, the realism the difficulty the all around awe inspiring art that is CoD4. I really found CoD4 to have one of the very best campaign’s I have ever played in a game but I find the Multiplayer not as fun. Granted CoD4 has a much more in depth character, weapon, class customization. However Halo I feel is a far superior and much more fun Multiplayer experience I mean has anyone here actually realized the depth of it I mean even just the quick change options contain a lot of content, you can make any game type you want with Halo, and don’t get me started about Forge Loves Forge
Over all I love Halo with a passion but I still like CoD4 and I play it (mostly cause my friends do) and as hard as it is for me to choose between to awesome games, I like Halo more. I do wish tho that it had a better character customization oh well maybe in the next one…
Anyways sorry for the ramble, I just love games and love talking about them, take care all and ill see you on the battlefield

IMO: (not attacking anyone, or COD4, both games are great but this is my opinion why one is better than the other)
Halo 3 is much better online multiplayer game. COD4 is more of a point and shoot game that doesn’t require as much skill. COD4 is MUCH more realistic, don’t get me wrong, which is good, but video games aren’t as much fun when they are too realistic. COD4 is limited to what you can do, you cannot be elusive in it, and you cant use as many tactics, and its very slow moving. In COD4 it generally ends up being “The winner is the one who sees the opponent first” Simply put, you cannot kill a low skilled player if they happen to see you in front of them and get a bullet off on you. I know you may say “but thats what makes it so hard and better, because you have to always be thinking, its like real life!” No because no matter how good you are, you can be killed by any crappy player at any time, and once someone has seen you, you can’t get away. The best players in COD4, are the ones who camp in a building, because they know that they can only take one person at a time, and their aim is better than everyone elses, so they will win one on one if they watch straight ahead of them. COD4 lacks mostly in game play speed, fire fights last for 2 seconds at the most because its a simple spray of bullets to kill someone, no matter where it hits them. You can’t elude the enemy because when you jump, you jump about a foot off the ground, which can’t get you anywhere except for maybe over a cabinet on the ground, also you are generally too slow to make it around a corner before you die.
In halo 3, the game requires a large amount of accuracy, and the better player generally always wins. All players start equally equipped. In halo, you can always beat the other player no matter what weapon they have if you are better, because you can take a decent amount of damage, you can always kill him with well placed grenades, and you can use more tactical methods than in COD4, such as jumping from ledge to ledge or jumping over the enemy, or using some way to outsmart him. Halo is much more than point and shoot, it requires the player to think the whole time. In halo, a skilled player can kill two or more decent players at once with other ways than just spraying bullets. Since you are quicker in halo 3 than COD4, if you are smart you can usually get away because the maps are designed to allow the player to use his skills to elude the enemy. A stupid player in halo, simply gets owned and outskilled. Which is much of the reason why more people love COD4, because you can be a stupid player and not very skilled, but still get a few kills by spraying some bullets. COD4 makes bad player think they are good, because they can kill people by shooting them first, and because the more time you put into the game, the higher your rank is because you can’t de-level.This makes bad players addicted to the game of spraying bullets, because they feel gratified by getting easy kills and leveling up higher than their more skilled friends. Im not saying that all COD4 players have no skill, they just don’t get to exercise their skills as much as in Halo 3.
OVERALL:
Call of Duty can be fun, but not as fun as halo on a COMPETITIVE level. Call of Duty has great graphics and is much more realistic gameplay(too realistic). Halo 3 has excellent graphics but perhaps not as good as COD4, although I think that Halo’s is better to look at. Both games are good, but I just can’t play COD4 over Halo 3 because it is boring and easy to me. Halo 3 requires much more skill and simply has more to it, which makes it more fun for me, and thats why I think its better, in my opinion.

I play both of the games both are great games I enjoy COD4 more for the players you get a bunch of jerks who suck at halo and they talk crap it tires me to hear people talk all this smack. so generally COD4 is better when you get to competitive gameing Halo takes off you generally meet people who are real cool and talk alot of crap in game but once the games over everyone settles down and are human again. the Campaign was better in COD4 I played both on there harest difficulty through. I am a long time halo fan but prefer COD4 just for the players online and it does come to who sees who first yet even though that is true in COD4 that is the style of game play not really a noob game keep you more awaire because of a better spawning program in COD4 compaired to halo which everyone has to agree Halo spawning blows balls

When I play video games, i tend to get pretty competitive, but i’m not really playing to be a HALO3 or CALL OF DUTY GOD, i’m only trying to have fun playing it. That’s why I think COD is the domminent game. Again as mentioned on another post,on Halo 3 the players aren’t little assholes thinking they’re better than everyone because they know how to “use” a battle riffle.

well, i personally think cod 4 sucks. It seems like any noob can just pick it up one day and magically be good at it. It takes about 7 shots to kill someone which basically means you don’t need accuracy as much as halo if all you have to do is spray bullets and you’ll kill the guy. It always seems that the “better” players are the ones that just camp around corners so its an easy kill. Whenever its a two on one you very rarely win in cod 4 because its so easy to die while in Halo 3 if your truly the better player you can manage to kill 2 people. In my opinion Halo 3 is much better than cod 4.
HALO 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notice that most people that support COD4 don’t really give a good reason to like the game. They would just say that “Halo 3 sucks and COD4 is better.” TobyWanShinobi brought up a great arguement on how he favors Halo 3 over COD4, but no-one has a real resonable come-back to him.
COD4 is VERY realistic but I don’t like how you can be killed very easily and it’s very true that it doesn’t take that much skill to win a game. You also can’t rank down. This makes a “noob” COD4 player to think he is the best on his first 3 days of playing the game.
Camping is a great way to dominate in COD4, not the best but it overwhelmingly works. In Halo 3 you can get only better and better. If you suck real bad, your rank gets hurt. Unlike in COD4, your rank in Halo 3 truely represents your skill or immense luck in the game.
In Halo 3, you can be one of the best and master all the guns you weild and how you use them.
In COD4, you can simply have a bigger better gun than the other player.
I can clearly see why people would like playing COD4. It’s very realistic, you can kill people with very little skill and feel like a bad-@$$, and you have a wide range of weaponry you can upgrade.
But this is why there are more players on Xbox LIVE playing Halo 3: Mostely everything is fair, weapons are all the same so everyone has a fair chance against themselves, the vehicals are just fun to dominate with, ranking system is great because if you suck you rank down or don’t rank up at all but if your great you can express you skills with your rank and have all those skills you have challanged with others that have achieved your rank, and the different cool and humiliating ways to kill an opposing spartan never gets old. Plus, Halo 3 is simply just fun to play.
Overall, play COD4 if you want to feel great of yourself and your guns, it has realism, great campaign and great customization for your weapons. Play Halo 3 if you want to play a game where skills and mind power matter a great deal during online-play, feel proud of your rank, and have many cool and funny ways to own noobs. And yes, there are more funny moments in Halo 3 than in COD4.

i think that cod4 blows halo3 out of the water. i hate halo because you have to shoot your enemy 100 times to kill them and by that time someone else has already killed me. on call of duty you can kill some one in 7 shots just like a real war. you can effectivley manage your team into snipers, close quarters, and grenadiers. i love cod and dislike halo. you may not but i dont care. that guys comparisons rocked. he had some good points although it was cheap to add in vehicles.

Opinion. Thats all it comes down to really, is what interests you. For me I have played Call of Duty 2 for the computer and loved it so when I got Xbox360 I figured, “Hey CoD4 sounds like a good investment”, and it was! Go figure - I also got Halo 3. Now it’s a fun game but it really didnt have the action CoD4 seems to have. The games differences are really up to players. Firefights will never last long if one player is good and one is bad.. but it might last a long time if they both suck or both are real good. You can drive vehicles in CoD4 but you get radar, airstrikes and helicopters.. the same as if some noob jumped into a wraith or ghost in Halo3. Now both have their perks like details of CoD4 or the certain weapons like the GravHammer of Halo3. But honestly how can a 55 Gold Cross for CoD4 compare Halo3 to a 50star player? I cant, i love CoD4 so i WILL NOT say Halo3 sucks. For me, id rather play CoD4 but thats MY OPINION, just like someone else’s opinion might be CoD4 blows.

I disagree with toby wan shanobi.CoD involves much more strategy than he said. It takes strategy to not get seen in the first place, and it takes STRATEGY to pick which gun and perks and attachments are most appropriate for the level and team. Thats half the fun! And in the end the whole point of paying 60 bucks for the game is to have fun. whichever game u choose, dont worry about the ratings. If its fun, then play it if u like it. (not that im saying dont ignore them, cuz some games flat out SUCK)

Err i hear alot of people on here saying that cod 4 doesnt require skill to be a better player, this is very untrue, i have logged hundreds of hours on both halo 3 and cod 4 multiplayer, i enjoyed halo 3 for a while when it first came out, but it then became apparent that it was mostly a battle of i shoot the guy in front of me while an enemy shoots me in the back at the same time trading off a kill for a death, my point is that the game mechanics in Halo 3 make it so a “tru skilled player” wont dominate another player, the sniper rifle in halo is garbage as where the sniper rifles in cod require you to hold your breath and lead the player, so obviosly more skill is required, also the guns have a more realistic feel in cod , the ones with more power are more jumpy making the less accurate, the grenades do what they are supposed to, if a grenade blows up in your crotch you should die!!! lol space suit or not. really all halo 3 is a game for younger kids who want to jump around constantly and tea bag other guys “insert gay comment here” everytime i play halo if have to listen to 12 year olds talk about my mom and call me a faggot lol, cod is more relaxed with an older crowd who understand, if you get shot in the head with one bullet you will die, and it takes skill, not like halo where you have to pump an entire magazine into a person to kill them and then sometimes not even then, they just hit you with there gun in the face and “assasinate you” from the front haha, i really cant stand halo 3 anymore, im glad GTA 4 and Cod4 have passed it on the XBL most played games, its day is over, long live the new king of FPS Call of duty 4 is the real deal, its my fav game now”

You people make me sick. Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4. *sigh* Comparing a Si-Fi to a Classic 21st centuary game. I’m guessing that… maby half of you have played Halo 3 AND COD4. You continuous remarks of [insertgamehere and refrence it to gays]sucks is pathetic. Here’s some advice:
People who think Halo 3 is best:
Go play COD4 for 3 days. You’ll like it.
People who think COD4 is better:
Go play Halo 3 on L.E.G.E.N.D.A.R.Y. Difficulty. With all skulls on. When you die by the thousands, you will stop you bitching about how easy it is. Then look at the environments, and crank down the brightness.
Frankly, comparing a Sci-Fi with a 21st Century shoo-em-up isn’t just cause to flip out. Deal with it. Show some maturity. And respect both games.

Halo 3
- If you wanna suceed in multiplayer you must know the maps, use the three types of nades, know when to use the BR and when to use an AR and learn to outsmart the enemy (yes you can actually manage to kill two enemys)
-To help a friend you need accuracy (friendly fire cant be disabled) if you try to do that in COD4 your friend would be allready killed
- The game has enormus space jumps
- Three bullets of an assault rifle wont kill your opponent
- Its not made to be realistic but your really need skill to kil someone (I like that)
COD4
- Excellent grafics (better than halo)
- realistic waepons
- Interesting campaign
- easy multiplayer kills (that doesnt mean multiplayer sucks)
- first person to see you is the one to kill you
- Its real and fun, it makes you feel like an SAS or Marine.
- Strategies can be outsmarted easily (if you place someone in this corner and you intend to flank, all of a sudden a chopper comes by and takes you both down O_O?)
- The most skilled player are the snipers (more patient, smarter, more skiled) but not everyone can be a sniper can they? Now, at sniping, you need to look for a building, hill, wall with a hole that will be youre place, claymores are essential for door in which the enemy can enter, sniping is stealth, camouflage, acuracy, recon and al that stuff
- camping is not the same as sniping, camping is waiting behind a corner for someone to barely notice you and take him down, thats no skill.
Theres no better game, I like both, both are great, it just depends on how you play or what you look for in a game(fun, skill, teamwork, real-time strategy).
that’s all

I (personally) love both games, but I like CoD4:MW more. I love the ability to customize my own personal classes, how my Primary and Secondary (or Sidearm) will work, and all of the perks (Bandolier, UAV Jammer, and the Hip-Fire accuracy perk are my current favorites), as well as the ability to occasionally wipe the entire enemy team out with a single, well placed mine, block of C4, or grenade. Or the strange moments where the stars align, and the whole enemy force is standing still, begging for valuable, hard to get, Headshots to be placed at your choosing.
As for those of you who say “Call of Duty 4 requires no skill” probably haven’t ever tried to take an enemy HQ with an M14 and M1911, alone. It’s not easy, and it does require a small bit of planning, but it can be as simple as “Flash and Clear.” not “I’ll throw two plasmas, and if nothing moves on Motion Tracker [Often wrongfully referred to as RADAR, which Call of Duty possesses], I’ll run in with my Rocket Launcher and Gravity Hammer like the total badass (read: Heavy Noob) I am”. And for the few who say “You can’t be stealthy!”, Yes, you can. UAV Jammer, and just not shooting at EVERY little thing that moves can mean the difference between getting the drop on a pain-in-the-ass sniper, and being killed 3 blocks away from him. It’s also known as DISCRETION.
And yes, the explosion in Call of Duty’s campaign was overtly real, disturbing in a sense. Remember where you were fighting (The Azerbaijani area of the Middle East), however, and it becomes faintly scary. Does the Iyatollah ring any bells? The Iranians have nukes. And they dislike us. Thankfully, they have no MIRVs, let alone large, scary Cold War missiles. Less Thankfully, we have no Captain Price or Soap incase of said Missiles.
Yes, Halo 3 has awesome, sometimes spectacular moments in both Campaign (Most of the level Covenant) and Multiplayer (Steppin’ Razor was insane to pull off, but so worth the effort), not to mention Forge mode and the previously unheard of the included-in-game Screenshot and Movie makers.. as well as the huge fanbase it garnered from Halo: Combat Evolved (the best of the series!) and Halo 2 (the worst of the series…), but Call of Duty 4 just has Halo 3 beat.
